i know several people who have circumnavigated the world backpacking
Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and all very accomodating to backpackers (contrary to the USA that does not offer very many hostels). Also, traveling around these places by public transportation is very easy.
draw up an itinerary and go for it!|||So true! Although one of my favorite hostels is in the States (HI-NY). One quick tip I would add it so connect with locals using a site like Tripping (https://www.tripping.com). You can get tips on where the best, cheap food is and even set up free lodging. Plus you have more fun!

|||I did couch surfing/staying with pen pals, for the most part, through Europe, Russia, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Georgia, India, China, Dubai, Egypt and some others.
My trip was relatively cheap because I went to cheap places mostly. I backpacked for six months for about 12,000$ USD. That includes airfare, visas, the Eurorail pass, food, etc.
I would think America, New Zealand and Australia, plus Western Europe would be more expensive in general (for food, clothes, travel, etc.) So just keep that in mind.
You probably couldn't do all of that in 1 summer. It took me 6 months and I wish I stayed longer!
