What are the styles/cultures of surfing and what is the history of surfing?

I'm really interested in surfing and I want to learn more about it. Websites with this info would be helpful! :] Thank you.|||surfing as a cultural phenomenon has 'morphed' several times in the last 75-100 years. In places like Australia, it has become a much more 'main stream' sport than it is in the US. However, the popularity of surfing has skyrocketed in the last 10-15 years in the US. (perhaps for the good, and perhaps not. many people fail to see the 'spirit' of surfing, and don't understand the connection with the ocean that real surfers feel. Of, course, their is BIG MONEY in selling lots of popped out boards made in far eastern sweatshops to Yuppie kids who surf for two weeks, and then go back to video games). Although, there are still a lot of young folks who really seem to get the big picture, and they are the future of surfing.

Unfortunately, the stereotypical Jeff Spicoli image of surfers has become pretty ingrained in the US. It is of course far from true, I am an old guy, who surfs with lots of other old guys. I have an advanced degree, and surf with doctors and lawyers, and carpenters and police officers. So, we aren't the stereotypical 'stoner' surfers.

I'll give you a few good links that looks back into the history of surfing, they may answer you question a little more in depth. I have been surfing since 1966, and it has provided a constant source of enjoyment.
