Why does everyone keep asking if they are to old to surf. I keep seeing so many question "can i learn to surf at __ years old", where do they come up with the thought that there is an age limit to surfing or learning to surf? I just dont get where they are coming from, or getting their info.|||To KiwiBubb: Well for someone who only wats to surf to compete, you will never get good at it, because you don't understand the sport.
For everyone else there is no age limit. My grandchildren have all started getting ready to surf, swimming and playing in the ocean, boogie boarding and getting to feel at home with the waves at at 4 or 5. But, they didn't start surfing for real until about 7 or 8. My son started surfing at 11 or 12, but he was really at home in the ocean by then. My son-in-law, an accomplished sailboarder, started surfing at 25. My neighbor started on her 50th birthday, and I am nearly 60, and I have been surfing since I was 14.
I think a lot of people get the impression that there is some sort of "age limit" because athletes who excel many competitive sports start at a young age, swimming, figure skating etc. But, those are sports that exist almost solely in a the competitive world. While I enjoy watching really great surfers in contests, I am not all that interested in competitive surfing. The last contest I rode in was in 1970. And I have friends who surf far better than almost anyone I have ever seen in a contest, and they have never been in one, ever.
I guess they are pool swimmers or soccer players hwho started at age 3 and think if you haven't been weaned on the sport, you'll never get to the "money shots" in competition. But, that is just not what surfing is about.|||yeah i know what you mean aye?
But i think it's a matter of people thinking they may not be able to pick up the skills as fast as they'd like to, or they're wondering whether they'll be able to make it pro or not.
I know one bloke who's probably about mid-30's, he's been trying to learn how to surf for about 3-4 years, and i don't mean to be cruel but he's absolutely shocking, i mean like this bloke can't even stand up!
But yeah mate i totally know where you're coming from, so here's a message for all you's out there who think it's too late for you to learn how to surf. IT'S NEVER TOO LATE!!!!!!
have a peace week mate :)
jesse xo|||Its human nature to doubt and stop yourself doing something thats potentially gonna cause hurt. As much as they want to try surfing, alota people see it as too crazy and hard for them. therefore they find ways to back out of it. If only people didnt give a crap about anything and gave it a go, theyd achieve anything in life!|||I asked the same question about how old you have to be to surf. I know there is no age limit but I personally wanted to know if I could ever compete if I started at _ age....Everyone knows you can surf at any age, but it may be for different reasons.
