What are the most important aspects of physical fitness for surfing? What should I focus on?

I've recently joined a surf club for the summer, and having never surfed before, I want to start training so I can be better.

What parts are most important for surfing? Upper body strength? Stamina? Core? What should I be working on to make surfing easier and more enjoyable?|||Stamina is most important at this stage of the game. If you have access to a pool, begin swimming laps as soon as possible. The secret is to develop strength and stamina through your full range of motion in the shoulders and upper back. If you do not have a pool, start doing push ups, and pull ups. Sit up are also a good exercise, as it will help with the core. Planks are another easy exercise, as they do not require any work out equipment and can be done anywhere.

Another aspect which you need to address is balance. You can be in the best shape of your life, but without balance, you will not have an enjoyable experience in the water. An Indo Board is an excellent way to develop "surfing balance." If you can't find/afford one, try getting a 10 ft section of 4" x 8" wood, like a balance beam. Practice walking frontwards and backwards on that several times, along with balancing on each foot for a period of time. Not only will that help with your balance, it will also work on your core. Good luck to you, and keep us informed on your progress throughout the summer.|||Best thing you can do to get in shape for surfing is go surf. If you get out and surf everyday it won't be long before you start feeling your paddling stamina increasing a lot. Maybe yoga and/or stretching to work on getting you center of gravity down and core strength is crucial as it is in every other sport. Hope that helps.|||theres no doubt that when you surf it takes a physical toll on your body in a good way. The way i sared training was the indoboard http://indoboard.com/cart/index.php?main鈥?/a> . its a balance mechanism to help you gain balance and work out your core. the first thing you should do is start practicing swimming before you start surfing. also try yoga. its a pretty intense work out but helps certain parts of your body gain strength. work out your arms a lot also. its no help to paddle out with flimsy arms. trying some other sports to help gain endurance might help also. other than that just enjoy the sport of surfing.|||upperbody because when you surf you have to use your arms to paddle out sometimes paddling out far distances. Stamina is also very important for swimming. You should work on swimming paddling out your legs. learning how to duck dive or turtle with your board.|||Swimming is a great way to get into shape for surfing.
